PLUNJI LAB

Follow the evidence

An open examination of the science behind facial cold-water immersion.

PLUNJI LAB is where we examine the independent research connected to the Breath Plunge™. Each entry looks at one question: what researchers studied, what they observed, where the evidence is mixed, and what remains unknown.

We include findings that support our thinking and findings that challenge it. We distinguish between established physiology, early evidence and ideas that have not yet been tested. Most importantly, we separate research on facial cold-water immersion from research conducted specifically on PLUNJI.

Because those are not the same thing.

Most of the research here studies a single immersion in a laboratory. Almost none of it studies what happens when someone does this every day, for longer, over years. Not because anyone ruled it out, but because a practice with no consistent form is difficult to study. Temperature, duration and method varied from one study to the next, which is why reviewers keep describing this literature as unstandardized.

Hold the variables still and the question becomes answerable. That is what this archive exists to follow.

The work behind these entries began in the summer of 2024. They were published together as the archive opened, and PLUNJI LAB will grow as new research emerges and as we examine new questions through the same standard. Every entry is numbered, dated, sourced and publicly archived so the evolution of the thinking remains visible.

This research archive is one public layer of PLUNJI LAB. What Contributing Plunjists and the wider community notice will live alongside it, always clearly labeled as community observation rather than established evidence.
